3 Tips on Starting and Growing a Photography Business

Ashen Photography

I got interviewed by Subkit this month! For the last question, they asked me the top tips I'd give to anyone looking to start and run a photography business today, and as a woman-owned small business, this question gave me a lot to think about. With so much reflecting on my journey over the years, I figured I'd write a mini blog post about it as well! For the full interview, check it out here! So without further ado, here are my top 3 tips on starting and growing a photo business today:

1. PRIORITIZE CLIENT EXPERIENCE AND BUILD TRUST WITH YOUR CLIENTS

Business is the most personal thing in the world! Being in front of the camera can be nerve-wracking. Your clients need to trust you so they can be their most authentic self in front of the camera. Always remember to serve your clients to the best of your ability, even if it costs you extra time or money. In the end, good clients will recommend you to other good clients, and this positive word of mouth is paramount for a growing business.

2. PERSEVERANCE IS EVERYTHING

In any business, there will always be things that don't go your way. Don't dwell on your mistakes. Instead, learn from them and figure out what you can do better next time. If you've never failed, then that means you've never pushed yourself to grow and achieve what you want.

3. ALWAYS BE TRUE TO YOURSELF

Do what you're passionate about, and you'll have the energy to start the business. As you get deeper in the business, there will be days when everything might feel too overwhelming to handle. To avoid burnout, be patient with yourself, and always remember the reason why you started the business in the first place. For me, what motivates me every day is the connections I make with people and then being able to tell their story and preserve it through timeless images.

Finally, remember to have fun along the way! Get creative with your photos from time to time. Try new poses, prompts, angles, locations! Pursue your craft like a student; you're never too old to learn! I hope these tips were helpful, and I can't wait for you to start your own entrepreneurial journey.

Forever cheering you on,

Audey
