Top 5 Estate Wedding Venues in SF Bay Area & Northern California

What a blessing it is to live in California. With our Mediterranean climate that rivals Europe, SF Bay Area Estate Wedding Venues can also rival those abroad. For couples dreaming of a wedding that feels intimate, timeless, and deeply personal, these Northern California luxury estate wedding venues offer something truly special, and some are only an hour away and nearby San Francisco!

Throughout Northern California, there are several extraordinary estates that allow couples to celebrate in spaces that feel more like a beautiful home than a traditional venue. So without further ado, here are my top Bay Area and Northern California estate venues, each offering its own unique atmosphere for couples who want a wedding that feels elevated yet personal.

Olympia's Valley Estate Wedding

Olympia’s Valley Estate feels like discovering elevated sustainable celebration tucked into the hills of Sonoma County. Set on 2,000 pastoral acres outside Petaluma, this idyllic, family-owned farmstead is as committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship as they are to hosting spectacular events.

Highlights include:

  • Locally sourced farm-to-table cuisine

  • Pondside ceremony location surrounded by nature

  • 1865 Victorian home with a 150-year old barn for reception & dancing

Ceremonies are held pondside, beneath the arms of a weeping willow, and couples can choose to take their Just-Married portraits by the pond as well. For those with adventure in their hearts, I recommend setting aside a buffer of 15 minutes to get in and out of the row boat in your timeline!

For couples who want a sustainable farmstead and homey-inspired wedding close by San Francisco, Olympia’s Valley Estate is just 1 hour north from San Francisco.

Filoli Historic House and Gardens Wedding

Filoli Historic House & Garden is one of the most iconic estate wedding venues in Northern California.

Originally built in 1917, the Georgian-style mansion sits at the center of a 654-acre estate. Located in the rolling hills of the Peninsula just south of San Francisco in Woodside, Filoli offers a rare combination of historic elegance, manicured gardens, and sweeping estate grounds.

Couples love Filoli for its:

  • World-renowned formal gardens

  • Exclusive use of the full Garden after 5pm

  • Incredible seasonal blooms throughout the year

Elopement packages start at $4,000 for up to 10 guests, and a wedding buyout starting at $75,000. Please do note that even with a wedding buyout, Filoli is still open to the public until 5pm, and so there will be Filoli attendees with you throughout the day to make sure outside guest's are not in your photographs!

A fine art documentary photography approach works especially well at Filoli Historic House & Garden, and is perfect for either an intimate or grand celebration, just 45 minutes from San Francisco.

Montage Healdsburg Wedding

Nestled among rolling vineyards in Sonoma wine country, Montage Healdsburg blends modern luxury with the natural beauty of the region. What makes this venue special is how seamlessly the architecture integrates with the surrounding landscape. Clean lines, warm wood tones, and expansive vineyard views create a refined but relaxed atmosphere.

Couples often choose Montage for:

  • Sweeping vineyard ceremony backdrops

  • Century-old Oak Trees

  • 34 suites for an elevated guest experience

Because of how expansive Montage Healdsburg can be, depending on your ceremony and reception location, I recommend couples to factor in extra transportation time from ceremony to reception. Montage Healdsburg can accommodate intimate gatherings of 20 guests to larger celebrations of up to 250 guests.

For couples planning a destination-style wine country wedding, Montage Healdsburg offers a truly immersive setting that is ~1.5 hours north from San Francisco.

Villa Montalvo (Montalvo Arts Center) Wedding

Tucked in the foothills above Saratoga, the historic Villa Montalvo estate offers one of the most romantic garden settings in the South Bay. Originally built in 1912 as the private estate of Senator James Phelan, Villa Montalvo is now one of the most beloved cultural landmarks in the Bay Area. With its Mediterranean-style villa, expansive gardens, and peaceful wooded surroundings, it provides an unforgettable setting for couples planning a luxury estate wedding near San Jose and San Francisco.

Couples choose Villa Montalvo for its:

  • Iconic Mediterranean-style villa architecture

  • Beautifully landscaped gardens and terraces

  • Proximity to family residing in South Bay

With its historic architecture, gardens, and sweeping views, Villa Montalvo offers one of the most romantic estate backdrops for wedding photography in Northern California, located just 1 hour south of San Francisco.

Stonepine Estate Wedding

Stonepine Estate in Carmel Valley offers a secluded and luxurious countryside setting, blending European elegance with California wine country charm.

Originally built as a private estate, the property features:

  • A taste of Tuscany in California

  • Chateau Noel, their century-old Tuscan villa.

  • Proximity to California's famous Carmel-by-the-sea & Big Sur

One of the best parts of getting married at Stonepine Estate is its proximity to some of California’s most iconic coastal destinations. Guests attending a wedding weekend here often enjoy exploring the charming coastal village of Carmel-by-the-Sea, scenic drives along the cliffs of Big Sur, and wine tasting in Carmel Valley

For couples planning an intimate yet elevated celebration along California’s central coast, Stonepine Estate is one of the most exclusive wedding venues near Big Sur.

Located ~2.5 hours from San Francisco, or ~1.5 hours from South Bay.

Private Estate Wedding

Last but not least, many couples choose to celebrate in their own home. What makes private home estate weddings special is their intimacy. Celebrations feel deeply personal, often with smaller guest counts of 30-50 guests as you're inviting loved ones into a beautiful private world for the day. These are one of my most favorite celebrations to photograph.

Lasting Tips for Planning an Estate Wedding in Northern California

Estate weddings often require thoughtful planning since many properties start as blank canvases, so to end this post, here are a few helpful tips for couples planning an estate wedding in Northern California:

• Work with an Experienced Wedding Planner: Beyond Design, they will help coordinate rentals, catering and bar, logistics and transportation for guests, and more.

• Plan with Season and Sunset in Mind: Try to avoid the weeks after Daylight Savings or anything after late-Oct. as part of the appeal of these estate venues are the beauty of the incredible views when it's still light out.

• Create a Seamless Guest Experience: Look into property guest suite weekend buyouts to allow your guests more time to enjoy the property.

• Embrace the Natural Beauty of the Estate: One of the greatest advantages of estate venues is that they already offer incredible scenery and architecture. Opting to design your wedding in a way that will highlight and not overshadow the natural beauty of the property.
